What is Agile Transformation?

Transformation is actually a process of progressively decoupling the organization and it’s underlying technologies while learning how to operate in smaller batches at the team level and across the enterprise. The process centers around forming teams, defining an agile governance model, and identifying and base lining metrics the company cares about, and using those metrics over time to measure and track improvement.

The Transformation process begins with laying the foundation for an agile enterprise. By forming teams and installing a Lean/Kanban based governance model, while maintaining focus on longer term planning, risk management, and dependency management.

There's no silver bullet or one size fits all process for migrating a single department or an entire enterprise to the Agile development process. 

Our Agile coaching experts assist and guide your organizational adoption and transformation while navigating the pitfalls and obstacles that often challenge new endeavors. Here are the phases of Agile Engagement

Assessment

As a first step toward transformation, we engage in a short assessment phase designed to fully understand the current state of development and project management within organization. 

The results of this assessment will be used for designing high-level road-map for transformation

Define the Strategy 

Based on the results of readiness assessment, Create end to end vision for the Transformation

  • Define Vision: Define the overall vision and road-map of the Agile Transformation
  • Defining Team Structure: Agile organizations are built around agile teams. Step one is to develop a plan for forming teams that can stay together over time. Not all agile teams though are Scrum teams. We'll need Program, Portfolio, and Product Owner Teams to effectively do agile at scale.
  • Defining Governance and Protocol: Define the Governance rules and protocol of operation of the teams. Governance is simply the way you'll coordinate work across teams, set priorities, and ensure the organization is working together to deliver against your highest priority business goals. Concepts from Lean, Kanban, and TOC are blended to develop your PPM framework.
  • Defining Metrics & Tools: Identify and baseline the metrics and tools which compliments overall Agile Transformation Roadmap. Metrics are essential to understand if your transformation is progressing and you are getting the business benefit you expect from your investment. Metrics must be defined, base lined, instrumented, measured, and improved to know you are on track.

Conduct Transformation

  • Form Teams: Create cross functional teams in the organization
  • Train Teams: Conduct relevant training to the team members. We offer wide range of training and certification programs Enabling people with the skills and knowledge to operate in the new model is an essential component of leading the transformation. We will deliver training tailored to the job functions and processes within each team and conduct hands-on workshops to reinforce practices.

  • Coach Teams: Continuously engage in coaching the team. We believe that training alone is insufficient to make change stick. We recommend several sprints of coaching per team as well as help decomposing the backlog, preparing for release planning, and gathering metrics while you're gaining proficiency in the new model.
  • Hand hold the teams for several iterations: Build a support system to the team by hand-holding them for several iterations to see that teams are on the path of getting self-managed

Self-Managed Teams

  • Assessment and Health Check: Do the assessment to check the level of progress and improvement in Organizational Agility Factor. Plan for corrective interventions as required
  • Targeted Coaching: Conduct Targeted coaching and hand-holding the teams till they get to truly self-managed in nature. Throughout the engagement, our coaching strategy is tailored to the individual needs of each team, and focused on reinforcing the competencies that are most at risk. Progress is communicated to the transformation steering committee on a regular cadence.
  • Sustainable Plan: Define a plan on maintaining and monitoring the progress with artefacts throughout. Depending on the size and scope of the enterprise, it may be necessary to develop artifacts that support and reinforce the transformation. These may include job aids or templates, knowledge based articles, and even computer based training.
